Intermediate Host

Also known as: Secondary host

An intermediate host (from Latin intermedius — situated in the middle) is any organism in which a parasite undergoes one or more larval stages of development and reproduces asexually.

This stage of the life cycle is essential for the pathogen to mature, increase in number, and subsequently be transmitted to the final host.

Etiology and pathophysiology

The intermediate host typically becomes infected by ingesting parasite eggs (e.g., helminth) from the environment (with vegetation or water).

Upon entering the gastrointestinal tract, the egg sheds its shell, and a larva emerges. Penetrating through the intestinal wall, it migrates with the bloodstream to various organs and tissues (muscles, liver, or lungs), where it becomes encapsulated (covered with a capsule).

Clinical significance

When humans act as accidental intermediate hosts (as with trichinellosis or toxocariasis), they are a dead end in the transmission of the disease. Larvae do not excrete from humans but die in their tissues over time.

Understanding the role of intermediate hosts is fundamental to sanitary and epidemiological measures. Veterinary and sanitary controls are aimed specifically at disrupting the transmission of pathogens from the intermediate host (such as pigs or sheep) to the final host (such as humans).
